Franklin Avenue Rookery

The Franklin Avenue Rookery for Wayward Babies is Laura’s second book of short stories.  One of the stories was awarded finalist in LitMag’s Virginia Woolf Award for Short Fiction.  The Reno News & Review featured another of the stories on its cover, and printed the entire story – something it has never done before.

Laura Newman’s first collection, Parallel to Paradise, won the Poynter’s Global Ebooks gold award for short stories.  One of the stories was accepted for the Huffington Post’s 50 Fiction Series. The Reno Gazette Journal included Parallel to Paradise on their “bucket list” of top books by Nevada authors or about Nevada. She is a many-time winner of the Reno News & Review annual Short Fiction contest, including another first place in 2019.

Laura has presented several times at the Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl.

Laura is an Addy Award and American Marketing Association winner for her production of public service announcements combating heroin and other substance abuse issues in her community.  For this work she received the American Advertising Federation’s Community Contribution of the year award.

A bit of Laura’s writing managed to outrage the Catholic League. That was not her intent, but she loves a reaction.
